Common Window Shutter Materials Besides Wood

Folsom, CA window shutters

While wood window shutters are always classic and stylish, they do involve a lot of work and almost always come with a big price tag. However, there are lots of other kinds of materials you can choose for your Folsom, CA window shutters that offer more durability, better affordability, less maintenance and many more benefits over wood shutters. Some of these materials include:

  • Foamed Synthetics – Foamed synthetic shutters are set apart by an affordable price, water and fire resistance, non-toxic construction, and superior insulation for any kind of home. You can also find foamed synthetic shutters that are made with aluminum centers to help reinforce the shutter for less bowing and sagging over time. These shutters come in many different colors, shapes and sizes, and often have a very similar appearance to wood. Of all the synthetic shutter materials, foamed synthetics are probably the best, even though they are not as stiff or light as wood, limiting the design options. Keep in mind, though, foamed synthetic shutters cannot be stained, and can be bigger than 80 or 96 inches in length.
  • MDF – MDF, or medium density fiberboard, is simply sawdust mixed with glue and then formed into whatever shape that’s desired. These shutters can be coated in many different materials, like paint and vinyl wrap, to give different looks and functions. MDF is very affordable, but can be built to look just like more expensive, natural wood shutters, not to mention that MDF shutters are stable, and are resistant to warping. Its important to note, though, that MDF is not moisture resistant, and some kinds of MDF shutters peel and swell when they get too wet.
  • PVC – PVC, or Polyvinyl Chloride, is a hollow vinyl material that makes affordable and durable shutters. PVC shutters can be recognized by their lack of finish, and their sealing caps on the edges of the shutter blades. Though PVC shutters are affordable, they often have a plastic appearance that yellows when exposed to too much direct sunlight. They can also become brittle after years of use with improper care. However, their low price tag is very attractive.
  • LaminateLaminate shutters are made from thin slats of lumber that are glued together into whatever shape is desired. These shutters are very stable when made properly, and can be painted, stained or wrapped for any kind of look. Laminate is a great alternative to wood, as laminate is actually made from wood, giving them similar properties. One big difference though, is that laminate is a lot more affordable than wood. However, laminate shutters do not hold up well to moisture.
